Stark implores companies to support indie publishers

By Will McLennan in Media News on
As the new financial year takes shape, Pickr Founder and publisher Leigh :) Stark has issued a new callout for companies to open their wallets and support independent publishers in a bid to keep them viable.  “Companies should be willing to support publishers, particularly if they’re reaching an audience beneficial to them,” Stark told Influencing. He added, “A small amount of money can go a long way for independent outlets, particularly those reaching larger audiences.  Stark believes, “It's a little disingenuous to expect readers to support publications, but not larger companies. Earned media is a part of the marketing efforts of big brands and PR, but it also costs money to run earned media.” Stark has heard the call before to run advertisements to increase the income of his Pickr publication, but says he won’t.  “Before folks tell me "just run ads", I've had this discussion with in-house teams before about ads. Many find they don't work, but run them anyw

THE BRIEF: Another Tariff-ic day in news

By Matt Buchanan in Media News on
Suspicion of Xi now in the past: Twiggy The urge to say buzz off to being told what to do is generally considered a strong and dependable Australian trait, but it’s possible that sort of thing is not being said terribly much these days. On the Australian’s front page, Paul Garvey’s “exclusive” is a contextual piece illuminating Dr Twiggy Forrester’s editorial in the same paper. (“We’ve vilified China as an ‘enemy’; Anthony Albanese is right to make friends”). Garvey writes, “the Fortescue chairman offers a stunning defence of Beijing”. He also sings Hosannas about Albo’s tender-touch wooing of Xi and friends, while subtly throwing shade at our former bestie, the US, and not-so subtly bagging ScoMo for souring relations with China. Fresh back from his trip to the epicentre of world power, Neville Chamberlain – sorry, Dr Forrester writes: “It Is time for Australia and China to show the world particularly my friends in North America what is possi

VP Dhankhar’s sudden exit leaves Delhi buzzing; was it health, pressure, or a political plot?

Image source: India Today, PTI, Bhaskar English, Deccan Chronicle, TNIE and India TV News; Edited by Dinesh Raj M   Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation as Vice President first made headlines yesterday but what was left unsaid spoke louder, at least according to some media reports.  Hot off the Press Diwakar and Akhilesh Singh for The Times of India traced the beginning of the fallout to Dhankhar’s surprise acceptance of the Opposition’s impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Varma, which the Modi government had planned to initiate in the Lok Sabha. His uncharacteristic support for Mallikarjun Kharge and a refusal to toe the line triggered a silent fury best exemplified by the Prime Minister’s tersely-worded farewell on microblogging platform X. The Hindu's Sreeparna Chakrabarty highlighted the chain of events that suggested deepening cracks: no Cabinet members attending Dhankhar’s final Business Advisory Committee meeting, opposition parties rallying behind their for

Insider: Clarke explains award-winning game review process

By Will McLennan in Media News on
Alice Clarke has had a successful 2025 so far. In March, the consumer technology and game journalist picked up the Lizzy for Best Games Reviewer at the Australian IT Journalism Awards.  Just last Thursday, Clarke joined Influencing Insider, where she explained how she reviews games.  “I approach games reviewing the same way I approach tech reviewing…Generally, I get the code, play the game, think about it, and focus on ‘is it what it said it was supposed to be’; if it's not, is it better or worse? “Then I ask myself questions: Did I enjoy it? Was it original? Was it good? Was it fun? And even if the answer to everything is that it was good, that doesn't necessarily mean that's fun, and vice versa. “There are a range of different factors to balance. You also have to look at the narrative or the gameplay, the broader cultural implications of the narrative in the gameplay, and how it fits in with other games.” Clarke didn’t just provide insight into her game revie
