The Vanishing Artisan: How AI and Industry Culture Are Pushing Newsroom Video Editors to the Brink

By Abdul Nishad in Media News on
In today’s digital-first newsrooms, where stories are expected to be told faster, shorter and across more platforms, one role is quietly fading into the background: the video editor. Video editors were once central to the storytelling process. Today, they are increasingly marginalised both culturally and technologically. Their responsibilities have multiplied, their recognition has dwindled and their value is being questioned in the age of rapid AI-driven automation. Amit Garg, a senior video strategist with more than two decades of experience in the industry, including 16 years at CNN-News18, offers a clear perspective on the changing landscape. He believes video editing is not merely a technical function. It is a form of creative storytelling. The video editor, he says, shapes what the audience sees, feels and remembers. Yet, in most modern newsrooms, the role has been reduced to that of a technician. Despite juggling tasks like cutting footage, designing audio, colour grading

What if AI’s not coming for your job because it’s already doing parts of it?

By Pragadish Kirubakaran in Media News on
Microsoft’s latest research into AI’s real-world impact has put a number on what many media professionals have been sensing for a while. Analysing over 200,000 real work chats where employees were already using AI tools, the study revealed the 40 jobs most affected by AI, and 40 jobs least touched by it. Spoiler: if you work with words like I do, AI is already breathing down your neck. Interpreters, translators, writers, editors, PR executives and journalists are among the most exposed, with up to 98 per cent of their daily tasks potentially overlapped by AI. The study doesn't make a doomsday prediction about job loss, but it does shine a light on how quietly and consistently the nature of certain jobs is changing. Turns out, if your job revolves around language, writing, analysing, advising, translating, summarising, AI is already deep in your turf. Roles such as interpreters, technical writers, PR professionals, journalists, customer support representatives and even web dev

THE BRIEF: Bridging the divide

By Matt Buchanan in Media News on
Yesterday, if you squinted hard enough at the massed crowds tramping through the rain on the Sydney Harbour Bridge you could just about make out, here and there, a few protesters among all the journos. I jest, of course. This is serious stuff. Still, the stacked bylines of journos topping front-page reports across the land tells its own story. Events like this are why journos get out of bed – even on a Sunday. Gaza is the only story to push Trump, Epstein, Tariffs to the margins, and even if the Titanic sank again it would probably only make page 5.  It's hard to think of a subject more deserving of our collective attention in the moment yet more divisive. And the division is becoming more apparent in the coverage as political attitudes tug the needle away from a balanced concern for suffering on both sides.   That said, the Sydney Morning Herald headline “Sydney says enough” was a great example of getting to the heart of a genuine urge felt by most: Whatever this

Hot off the Press Citing lack of “cogent, reliable and acceptable evidence”, a special NIA court acquitted on Thursday all seven accused in the 2008 Malegaon bomb blast case, including former BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur and Lt Col Prasad Purohit. The judgment highlighted lapses in the probe conducted by the state’s anti-terrorism squad before it was handed over to the National Investigation Agency. The judge pointed to retractions by numerous witnesses and shortcomings such as mishandling of the crime scene and planting of evidence, according to Rebecca Samervel and Swati Deshpande for The Times of India. “Upon comprehensive evaluation, the prosecution
